Why You Should Clean Your Gutters (Before It's Too Late)

Most homeowners don't give their gutters a second thought. They sit up there, quietly doing their job — until the day they stop doing it. And when that happens, the consequences can be expensive, stressful, and completely avoidable.

What happens when gutters block up?

When gutters fill with leaves, moss, twigs and general debris, rainwater has nowhere to go. It overflows down the side of your property, soaking into fascias, soffits, brickwork and even your foundations. Over time, this leads to:

  • Damp patches on interior walls and ceilings
  • Rotting timber around windows and roof edges
  • Cracked or damaged rendering
  • Subsidence caused by saturated ground near foundations
  • Pest infestations — blocked gutters are a favourite nesting spot for birds and rodents

In East Sussex, where we get our fair share of rain throughout the year, the risk is even greater. A blocked gutter in November can cause structural damage that doesn't reveal itself until spring — by which point, repair bills can run into the thousands.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

For most properties in the Uckfield and Buxted area, we recommend a professional gutter clean at least once a year — ideally in autumn after the leaves have fallen. Properties surrounded by large trees may need clearing twice a year.

What does a professional clean involve?

At Brooks Exterior Cleaning, we use specialist equipment to remove all debris from your gutters and downpipes. We check that water flows freely, inspect for any cracks or damaged sections, and provide you with before and after photos so you can see exactly what was done.

It's a straightforward job that takes an hour or two — and it could save you thousands in structural repairs down the line.
